Education

The Surry SPCA raises money to support a major program in Surry and Sussex Counties called the Kind News Program.  The Surry SPCA sends thirty-five classrooms KIND NEWS.  Schools include Surry Elementary, Surry Middle, as well as Tidewater Academy.

KIND NEWSKIND NEWS is an award-winning classroom newspaper for children in grades Kindergarten though 6th grade.   The National Association for Humane and Environmental Education publishes the paper.   It is delivered to each classroom every month September through May.  It encourages good character development and emphasizes kindness to animals, respect for natural habitats, good citizenship and peaceful conflict resolution.

KIND NEWS is published at three reading levels: the Primary Editions (grades K-2), the Junior Edition (grades 3-4) and the Senior Edition (grades 5-6).  It covers many of the National Education Standards for the major subject areas.

Teachers receive a guide featuring worksheets, posters and Kind ID cards. They can incorporate materials into math, science reading and language.  Exercises are designed to help children with reading and writing skills as well as provide a forum for expressing their opinions and opportunity to contribute original short stories.   Over a million children read KIND NEWS across the nation.

You can adopt a special classroom(s) and/or help us expand readership into the Sussex Public Schools system. The Surry SPCA receives a special rate of $22.00 per classroom. Please designate the school teacher’s name, grade level and the name of the school and send your check to: Surry County SPCA, P.O. Box 96, Surry, VA 23883.  The teacher receives a certificate with your name as the classroom sponsor.
